The Aden Veterans Project - Digital Cataloguer

Legasee Educational Trust - The Aden Veterans Project

As a Digital Catalogue volunteer you will support the cataloguing of digital files, following the successful scanning and digitisation of physical archive material collected and safeguarded by Aden veterans. The goal is to organise and catalogue digital files accurately and consistently to make the images and documentation searchable and accessible.

What the Role Involves

  • Catalogue and organise digitised archive materials using project systems and guidance
  • Create accurate file descriptions, titles and metadata to support archive accessibility. This could include a brief description of the image content, approximate date of the photograph and key locations, people or themes identified
  • Verify that the digital files are named correctly according to the project naming convention and are linked correctly to the catalogue entry
  • Tagging - assigning descriptive subject tags, keywords, or location data to improve user discoverability
  • Adhering to Legasee Educational Trust’s policies and standards

What skills do I need?

No previous cataloguing experience is required, although an interest in history, heritage or military history would be beneficial.

We welcome volunteers who have:

  • Excellent attention to detail for accurate data entry and identification of historical content
  • A basic level of competency using computers, including web browsers and Microsoft Excel, with familiarity in managing and organising digital files and folder structures
  • Access to a computer and an internet connection
  • An organised and systematic approach to their work, with the ability to work steadily through a large set of files, ensuring consistency in entries
  • An interest in preserving veterans’ stories and heritage
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
