We are seeking enthusiastic and personable individuals with an interest in storytelling, history and communication to join The Aden Veterans Oral History project as volunteer interviewers. 

You will work directly with veterans who served during the Aden conflict, supporting oral history interviews that will form part of a permanent historical archive for future generations. You will receive mentoring and guidance from Legasee founder, videographer and oral historian Martin Bisiker.

What the Role Involves

  • Assisting with background research and interview preparation before filming sessions
  • Leading sensitive and meaningful conversations with veterans through prepared interview questions
  • Helping veterans feel comfortable and supported while sharing their experiences
  • Listening attentively and guiding conversations sensitively and professionally
  • Working alongside volunteer videographers to capture respectful and engaging interview footage
  • Assisting with basic interview administration and documentation where required

What skills do I need?

This role is ideal for people who would like to develop their confidence and communications skills while helping to preserve the personal stories of veterans.

We welcome volunteers who are:

  • Studying history, media or journalism
  • Interested in oral history, storytelling and preserving veterans’ experiences
  • Empathetic and patient with strong communication skills, as you will be working directly with veterans
  • Reliable, as you will need to manage your own time and meet project deadlines for finished content
  • Able to handle sensitive and confidential material

This role is based primarily in Blackpool where the interviews will take place, and will need to be completed in person. The interviews will be arranged at a mutually convenient time to fit around your other commitments.
