We are seeking Research Volunteers to support the development and enrichment of the Aden Veterans archive. This role involves assisting with background research into people, events, units, locations and historical context relating to service in Aden, helping to strengthen the accuracy, depth and accessibility of the archive.

Research volunteers will work with a range of public and private archives relating to Aden, including digitised archive materials, online resources and project records, contributing to a better understanding of the stories and materials held within the collection.

What the Role Involves

  • Undertaking digital and physical research into various topics relating to the Aden Emergency in military, political and historical contexts
  • Assisting in identifying and verifying information relating to veterans, events, locations and units
  • Supporting the enrichment of archive records through accurate contextual information
  • Helping cross-reference digitised materials with supporting historical sources
  • Contributing to the creation of clear and reliable research notes for archive use
  • Working collaboratively with archive and digitisation volunteers to improve record quality


What skills do I need?

No previous research experience is required, although an interest in history, heritage or military history would be beneficial. 

We welcome volunteers who are:

  • Curious and interested in historical research and storytelling
  • Detail focused and able to work carefully with information
  • Comfortable using computers and online research tools
  • Able to assess and organise information clearly
  • Reliable and able to work independently or as part of a team

This role is flexible and can be completed in person or remotely. The volunteering can be completed at a time that suits you, to fit around other commitments.
